A palimpsest is an ancient manuscript in which an older text has been erased to make room for a new one. However, traces of the original text often remain visible. Similarly, the history of the Roman theater in Mainz reflects this artifact, as it remained undiscovered for a long time and its excavations were repeatedly interrupted. Today, only remnants of the original theater are visible. The central concept of (Dis-)Continuity is embodied by the Roman theater, where human interventions disrupt the site and raise questions about the preservation and interpretation of cultural heritage.
